Privacy Policy
Last updated: 24 October 2026
This is how BB looks after your information. We’ve tried to keep it short and plain. If anything is unclear, write to us at support@becomebetter.app.
Who we are
Become Better (“BB”, “we”, “us”) is an app that coaches you to get better at things that matter to you. It uses AI to write skills, lessons and feedback just for you.
Data controller: the person or company that decides how your information is used.
For the internal alpha (private testing), BB is run by its founder as an individual, who is the data controller. From the beta, the data controller will be Ematech Studio Ltd.
If the controller changes, we’ll tell everyone who has an account before it does. You can reach us at support@becomebetter.app about anything in this policy.
What we collect, and why
We only collect what BB needs to work, to keep it safe and to make it better.
Your account
- Email and password. To make your account and let you log in. We store your password scrambled (hashed), so we can’t read it.
- First name. BB talks to you by your first name. It is sent to OpenAI only inside your own feedback requests.
- Birth year, and a yes or no to “Have you had your 18th birthday yet?” with its date. To check that you’re 18 or over and to personalise skills. We ask for your birth year, not your full date of birth, to keep less information about you.
- Your agreements, with the date. That you accepted the Terms, this policy and the OpenAI disclosure. This is our proof.
- An invite code and the date you used it, and invites you send. To give you access and keep numbers under control during testing. Kept for as long as your account exists.
- A push notification token, if you allow notifications on your phone. To send them.
What you do in BB
- Your skill requests, answers to follow-up questions and practice answers. To build your skills and give you feedback. These are sent to OpenAI (see “How AI is used” below).
- Your skills, progress and time spent. To show your skills and what you’ve completed, and to understand how BB is used.
- The plans, lessons and feedback written for you, with the version of the AI model that wrote them. To show them to you and to learn which content works.
- Your messages if you send us feedback, with the app version, your phone model and your iOS version. To read and answer them.
- Reports. If you report an AI lesson or message, we keep the report and the reported part, so we can review it.
- Safety flags. BB checks messages for harmful, off-topic or distress content. We record that a flag happened (not your words) so we can review how it works. Distress flags stay in our database and are never sent to our analytics.
Your choices
- Marketing choice. Whether you switched on “Keep me updated” (“Updates, reminders and offers” in My account), and where you made the choice: in the app, from an email link, a one-click unsubscribe, or a spam complaint. This is our record that you agreed or stopped it.
- Analytics choice. Whether “Share usage analytics” is on or off.
How BB runs
- Technical logs. Build and message IDs, the step that failed, timings and error codes. To fix problems and make sure nothing is done twice. They never hold what you typed or what the AI wrote.
- Your phone’s region. To pick the right helpline if you seem to be in distress. It is read on your phone and not stored.
- Subscription status. Payments aren’t live in the internal alpha. When they are, Apple and RevenueCat hold your payment details, not us. We keep your subscription status and the store’s original transaction ID (to restore purchases and deal with refunds and disputes).
- One free trial per email. A keyed hash of your email (a scrambled version we can’t turn back into your email) with a “free trial used” flag, so one email gets one free trial.
Analytics and error reports
We use PostHog, hosted in the EU, to see how BB is used so we can improve it. It is on by default and you can turn it off at any time with “Share usage analytics” in My account. It doesn’t include what you type or what the AI writes. It doesn’t track you across other apps or sites. We don’t store IP addresses and we don’t use it for ads. We use Sentry (EU) to see errors in our servers, and later in the app, with only the details our rules allow and no personal data.
Emails
- Emails we send. Codes, a welcome message and other messages about your account come to everyone. Marketing emails (such as “come back” notes) are sent only if you opted in, and every one has an Unsubscribe button that works straight away.
- What we count. For each email we note which one it was, whether it was delivered, when it was delivered and first clicked, how many clicks, and whether it bounced or was marked as spam. We count delivery and link clicks only. We don’t track whether you open an email. We never put the content or the address in this log. Clicks from link-checking software aren’t counted. It is kept for 12 months, or until you close your account if that’s sooner.
- Bounces. If an email to you bounces for good, we note the date and stop non-essential email to that address. It is cleared if you change your email.
- The “Account closed” email. When you close your account we send you one last email. For that, we keep your address, encrypted, only for the few minutes it takes to send it.
- If you reply to a BB email. Our no-reply addresses send one automatic answer, pointing you to support@becomebetter.app. We don’t store or forward your reply. To limit this to one a day, Cloudflare keeps a scrambled version of your address (a keyed hash) for 24 hours.
How AI is used
BB’s lessons, practice and feedback are written by AI from OpenAI. When you ask for a skill or answer a question, we send what you wrote to OpenAI so it can write your lessons and feedback. We ask you before first use, and keep your agreement.
- OpenAI’s terms say it doesn’t train its models on data sent through its API unless a customer chooses that. We haven’t.
- OpenAI may keep what we send for up to 30 days to watch for abuse, then deletes it.
- If you send a message that shows you may be in distress, BB shows a helpline based on your phone’s region (Samaritans in the UK, 988 in the US). That message isn’t sent to OpenAI to write anything. It only goes through the moderation (safety) check.
- Please don’t type health or mental-health details into BB. Lessons never ask for them.
Why we’re allowed to use your information
The law asks us to have a reason (a “lawful basis”). Ours are:
- Contract. To run your account and give you BB: lessons, feedback, progress and, later, your subscription. The AI is the service, so this covers sending your words to OpenAI.
- Consent. For marketing emails and pushes (“Keep me updated”), for notifications on your phone, and for the OpenAI disclosure. You can withdraw consent at any time.
- Legitimate interests. For analytics that improve BB (with an easy opt-out), for stopping fraud and misuse, for keeping the short list of records below to handle claims, and for keeping BB safe. We’ve weighed these against your rights.
- Legal duty. Where the law requires us to keep or share something.
Who we share it with
We don’t sell your information and we don’t use it for advertising. We use these companies to run BB. They process your information for us and only on our instructions:
- Supabase. Our database (Frankfurt, EU).
- Railway. Runs our servers (EU West).
- OpenAI. Writes lessons and feedback and runs safety checks (US).
- Resend. Sends our emails.
- PostHog. Analytics (EU).
- Sentry. Error reports (EU).
- Cloudflare. Our website, email links and the automatic reply to no-reply addresses.
- Better Stack. Checks that BB is up and alerts us if it isn’t.
- Backblaze. Holds our encrypted database backups. They roll off after 7 days.
- Apple and RevenueCat. The App Store, push notifications and, later, subscriptions and purchases.
- Anthropic. If BB has an outage, a short technical summary (error codes, counts and server notes, with emails, addresses, IDs and tokens removed) goes to Anthropic’s Claude so we can find the cause. It never includes what you typed.
We may also share information if the law requires it, to protect people’s safety, or if the business is sold or merged (we would tell you first).
Sending information abroad
Some of these companies are in the US, and some of our EU providers are US companies. When your information leaves the UK, we make sure it is protected: we rely on the UK’s adequacy decisions (such as for the EU), the UK extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, or the UK’s standard contract terms with the company, whichever applies.
How long we keep it
- While you have an account, we keep your information so BB works.
- Close account. “Close account” in My account closes your account at once, and your readable email leaves our login system immediately. We delete everything else within 30 days, backups included, except the three things listed next.
- Kept for 12 months after you close your account. Under legitimate interests (fraud prevention and legal claims) we keep: a keyed hash of your email (so one email gets one free trial), the store’s original transaction ID, and content you reported (the reported part only, with nothing linking it to you). Distress and safety-flagged content is not kept.
- Forgotten skills. When you tap “Forget” on a skill (or remove one after a report), it disappears from your view but we keep it, marked as forgotten, as a record in case of complaints or legal claims about the content. We haven’t set how long yet and will before BB opens to the public. “Close account” deletes forgotten skills too, unless you reported them.
- Email log. 12 months, or until you close your account if sooner.
- Safety flags. Kept for our review while your account exists and deleted with it.
- OpenAI keeps what we send for up to 30 days to watch for abuse.
- Backups roll off after 7 days, so closed accounts are gone from backups within the 30 days.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- tell you what we hold about you and give you a copy (access);
- correct anything that’s wrong;
- delete your information (the easiest way is Close account);
- limit how we use it, or stop using it for analytics or other legitimate interests (objection);
- give it to you in a format you can reuse (portability).
You can withdraw consent whenever you like: switch off “Updates, reminders and offers” or use Unsubscribe in any marketing email, and switch off “Share usage analytics” in My account.
To use any right, write to support@becomebetter.app. We’ll answer within one month. If you’re not happy, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint. We’d like the chance to put things right first.
Children
BB is only for people aged 18 and over. We ask your birth year when you sign up and don’t knowingly keep information about anyone under 18. If you think someone under 18 has an account, write to us and we’ll close it.
Keeping it safe
- Connections to BB are encrypted (HTTPS).
- Passwords are stored hashed, never in plain text.
- Backups are encrypted before they leave our systems.
- Secret keys are kept out of our code and replaced from time to time, and few people can reach your information.
- Our logs hold codes and IDs, not what you wrote.
No service is perfectly safe. If something goes wrong that puts your information at risk, we’ll tell you and the regulator as the law requires.
This website
This website uses no cookies, no analytics and no advertising. It loads nothing from other sites.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as BB grows. The date at the top says when it last changed. If a change matters to you, we’ll tell you in the app or by email before it starts. See also our Terms of Use.
